Day 295, Cocktail 294

St. Valentine’s Day…not to be confused with Harry Potter and his goblet of fire, but it does have a certain ring to it, don’t you think?  Anyway, we celebrated in fine style at the Twilight Lounge this past Monday.  I provided the cocktail, an asparagus and crab salad appetizer while Gwen whipped up the veal marsala for dinner and I closed with a Bananna’s Foster variant for desert.  A very nice evening, indeed!

My Valentine’s cocktail came courtesy of Colleen Graham’s cocktail blog.  I already had everything I needed (the champagne still unopened from New Year’s Day) and it looked like something that we could enjoy several of through the evening – although I must confess to also opening a bottle of Jadot Chassagne – Montrachet, one of my favorite Chablis’ of all time.

  Cherub’s Cup

  • 1 oz St. Germain
  • 2 oz Hendricks gin
  • 3/4 oz lemon juice
  • 1/4 oz bar syrup
  • 1 strawberry (for muddling)
  • dry champange or sparkling wine

Muddle the strawberry gently in the bottom of a shaker with the bar syrup.  Add ice and the gin, St. Germain and lemon juice.  Shake vigorously to mix and chill.  Strain into a collins glass with ice.  Top with your champagne and garnish with a strawberry.

Mmmm, delicious!  The elderflower flavors from the St. Germain play wonderfully with the strawberry and lemon.  The gin, with it’s floral and slightly cucumber flavor provide a nice base and the champagne gives it just a touch of fizz.  We enjoyed several of these with our desert and beyond that night!

Day 111, Cocktails 110 & 111

We arrived in Boulder yesterday for a mini family reunion to celebrate our Mom’s 70th birthday.  It was the first time we had my Mom, Cookie, my brother and all our kids and spouses together at one time!

With 1,068 miles to drive Thursday and Friday I had plenty of time to figure out a cocktail to celebrate my Mom’s birthday.  A lot of different ideas rolled through my mind until I settled on a couple of final options.  When we finally did arrive it was great to back with the whole family.  A quick trip to the garden for basil and mint and then it was time to mix.

  Paula Anna (Basil Version)

  • 2-1/2 oz Cazadores tequila
  • 2 oz Domaine de Canton ginger liqueur
  • 2-3 fresh basil leaves
  • 1 lime slice
  • 2-3 small strawberries, quartered
  • seltzer water

In a mixing glass muddle the lime slice and basil.  Add the strawberries and lightly muddle to release the juice but don’t crush them.  Add 3-4 ice cubes and the tequila and Domaine de Canton.  Shake to mix and empty into a pint glass.  Add 3-4 more ice cubes and top with seltzer water.

This cocktail is a take on a Monterrey Mule and fizz style drinks.  The tequila and ginger of the Domaine de Canton is a great combination.  The fresh basil really accents the drink well and the strawberries add a touch of sweet.

For a second version, try this with fresh mint in place of the basil.  It gives a slighter sweeter taste to the drink.  Try them both and let me know what you think!

 Day 91, Cocktails 93 & 94

Day 91 was last Sunday, I by then I had two more cocktails to tell you about.  The first cocktail I enjoyed at the Comet Cafe located in Milwaukee’s Eastside.  The Comet was featured on the Food Network show Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, so we decided to give it a try.  I’m glad we did!  The Comet features local ingredients prepared with a minimum of fuss.  They also feature a complete bar.  As I perused the drink menu I realized that this would be the place to try a Wisconsin favorite, the Brandy Old Fashioned.  At the Comet the Brandy Old Fashioned starts with muddled cherries, orange, sugar and bitters.  Brandy and sour mix are added and then served over ice, garnished with an orange and cherry.  This was a delicious cocktail, with bright, fresh flavors.  5 stars to the Comet Cafe for a great execution of this Wisconsin classic. 

Sunday evening found me at Mark Stoffel’s for a drink before heading to the Rave for the Thrill Kill Kult and Lords of Acid show.  Yes, the show was fantastic, especially the Lords of Acid as all the original members are still with the group.  I even found my way into the mosh pit for a spell, and lived to tell about it! 

Back to Mark’s house.  He had a variety of fruits out along with a bottle of vodka.  So, I grabbed a pint glass and four or five strawberries.  I crushed the strawberries into the glass and filled the glass with ice, 2 oz of vodka, 1 oz lemon juice and 1 oz bar syrup.  I stirred all this together and then topped it with tonic water.  The result was a refreshing strawberry lemonade that will get you of the Mike’s hard lemonade for life! 

  Strawberry Lemonade 

  • 4-5 fresh strawberries
  • 2 oz vodka
  • 1 oz lemon juice
  • 1 oz bar syrup
  • tonic water

Give this one a try on a hot day – it will cool you off!
